Becoming a runner

So you've been out and bought all the kit, you even got a fancy new pair of those luminous Nike VaporFlys, now it’s time to run! If you are one of the 1000's heading out today, hoping to become a ‘real runner’, then congratulation because you already are! The tough part now is staying one. So many people take up the challenge of running, only to give up shortly after as it can and usually does feel tough in the beginning. Those shiny new shoes become nothing more than just a dust gathering mess, shoved to the back of the cupboard and forgotten about.

Getting started is more than half the challenge so, here are a few tips to keep you going so that this time your challenge becomes more than just an empty promise to yourself:

1. Dress appropriately (living somewhere warm does make it easier)

That doesn't mean pile on as many layers as physically possible because it seems freezing out there! Good gear is worth investing in because you’re not giving up ;)

2. No distance is too short

Everyone gets tired quickly in the beginning so if you feel like you need to stop after a km/mile or two then stop. Each time you go out just try go that extra bit further. Before you know it you'll be smashing 5km (3 miles) runs like they're nothing!

3. Stiff legs are normal and it will stop happening

Your legs won't be accustomed to running yet so make sure you stretch properly afterwards to reduce any stiffness. The more often you run the stronger your legs will get, so keep at it.

4. Join a running club or social running group

It's much easier to keep going if you are in a group all motivating each other. It's also more difficult to skip a run if you know you'll let someone down if you don't pitch. Most running clubs will have beginners, intermediate and an advance group.

5. Enter a race

This is one of the best ways to keep to you going. Knowing that you will step on the start line in a few weeks is definitely enough to keep you getting out there. Races can be very exciting and crossing the finish line will feel incredible!

Enjoy and remember, you’re already a runner!
